SURMOUNT-OSA: Tirzepatide in obstructive sleep apnoea with obesity
Two phase 3, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials under one master protocol. Sample size not extracted, over 52 weeks. Sponsor: Eli Lilly and Company.
SURMOUNT-OSA (NCT05412004) tested tirzepatide once weekly at maximum tolerated dose at 10 mg or 15 mg against placebo in adults with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnoea and obesity. trial 1 enrolled participants not using positive airway pressure; trial 2 enrolled participants using pap at baseline.Tirzepatide reduced the apnoea-hypopnoea index, body weight, hypoxic burden, hsCRP and systolic blood pressure, and improved sleep-related patient-reported outcomes Primary source linked: the source is a citable peer-reviewed / registry record, which we have not independently re-extracted from the full paper in this session.
Study design
| Design | Two phase 3, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials under one master protocol |
|---|---|
| Population | Adults with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnoea and obesity. Trial 1 enrolled participants not using positive airway pressure; trial 2 enrolled participants using PAP at baseline |
| Sample size | Not stated |
| Intervention | Tirzepatide once weekly at maximum tolerated dose (10 mg or 15 mg) |
| Comparator | Placebo |
| Duration | 52 weeks |
| Primary endpoint | Change in apnoea-hypopnoea index from baseline |
| Sponsor | Eli Lilly and Company |
Results
Tirzepatide reduced the apnoea-hypopnoea index, body weight, hypoxic burden, hsCRP and systolic blood pressure, and improved sleep-related patient-reported outcomes
Adverse events & discontinuations
Not extracted from the source in this session.
Limitations
Industry-funded. PAP was withdrawn before assessment in trial 2, which complicates comparison with continued PAP therapy. Reduction in AHI is not the same as resolution of sleep apnoea, and tirzepatide is not a substitute for PAP in every patient.
Practical interpretation
This is one trial, reported by Eli Lilly and Company, read directly against the registry and publication linked below — GLP Ranked has not re-run the statistics or obtained the patient-level data. Results describe group averages under trial conditions and may not describe any individual's outcome, including with a compounded, non-FDA-approved version of a similar active ingredient. Always check the primary source before citing a specific number.
